Griffith
Evans’ practice consists of reclaimed wood jewelry. Inspired by African jewelry
and curvilinear wood furniture, he employs industrial fabrication methods to
produce personal adornment of singular form.
Griffith
harvests most of his wood locally in New Mexico from declining trees. Cutting a
log and seeing the exposed grain for the first time is one of the most exciting
parts of the whole process. His mind races with possibilities as the inside is
revealed. Griffith strives to convey this excitement by crafting carefully
finished, simple forms to celebrate the beauty of each piece of wood.
Griffith
cuts wood into thin strips and steams it. He then wraps the pliable wood around
custom-built forms. Once cured, the piece is shaped by hand and undergoes a
multi-step finishing process.
Griffith draws upon his industrial design education to create work that is minimal yet warmly inviting. His work has been exhibited nationally at Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, American Craft Exposition, American Craft Council Shows, Cherry Creek Arts Festival, Bellevue Art Museum Artsfair, CraftBoston, and elsewhere.
